Colossians 3:15 Keyword Study
First, let's look at what the ESV says in these verses.
"And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful."
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Col 3:15.
Now, we need to breakdown the words in the original language to better understand what the Apostle Paul was communicating to his audience. In other words, if we want to see the true application for our lives, we must understand the statement. Merely reading and understanding words in the English translation can easily lead us to misunderstanding and misapplication of the context.
Breaking down the words:
Peace (G1515) - This word means to be void of rage, anger and the havoc of war, with guaranteed assurance of our salvation through Christ.
Rule (G1018) - This word means to be an umpire, to determine or decide, to direct or control.
Hearts (G2588) - This is the mind, the fountain from where everything flows. Our thoughts, passions, desires, words, deeds, affections. It is our truest self by which the evidence of salvation or the lack thereof flows from. As Jesus said, "It's not what goes into a man that defiles him, but what comes out." This was referring to the "heart" ruling what comes out of a person.
Called (G2564) - to be invited. Invited into what, to be invited to the membership of the body. This is an invitation to "become one" with the body of Christ.
Now, let's take a look at the literal translation to see the message Paul was trying to communicate.
"And let not rage and the havoc of war control you, rather let the assurance of your salvation in Christ be the determining guide in all that you do and how you live, as is your duty as one who has been invited into the body as a member, to live in unity and be thankful."
Let us read this today and learn how we can apply these words as written by the Apostle and look past our own grammatical application. These words are heavy and require much prayer and meditation as we grow and learn to live according to the Jesus Model.
