Colossians 3:16 Keyword Study
As we dig in, as always, we will first look at what the English translation tells us.
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God."
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Col 3:16.
Breaking down the words:
1. Word (G3056) - First we must understand the word is living, it is continuous or constant. the Word of Christ does not lie dormant. In this verse it is referring specifically to the doctrine of salvation through Christ by which we are grafted into the family of God.
2. Dwell (G1774) - To be an influence in the way we live our lives for Christ.
3. Richly (G4146) - Greatly or abundantly
4. Teaching (G1321) - To impart instruction or instill doctrine.
5. Admonishing (G3560) - To warn and reprove.
6. Wisdom (G4678) - skill and discretion in imparting the truth of God.
7. Thankfulness (G5485) - Motivated by the grace of God
8. Hearts (G2588) - The truest part of a man, the soul, the desires, the passions.
Now, let's restructure the verse using the original language to get the intended message from the Apostle Paul.
"Let the doctrine of salvation through Christ, by which you have obtained right standing before God, greatly influence the way you live your life. Impart the gospel message and instill this doctrine in one another, warning and reproving one another with skill and discretion as you speak the truth of God. Sing songs of praise to God, being motivated by the grace of God which flows from your innermost being."
Surely we can see the intended message is much deeper and richer than what we can gather through a simple reading of the text. It must be understood that Paul is not just telling us that the "Word of Christ" should be a "great influence." The message here is that the "Word of Christ" is "THE GREATEST AND ONLY" influence in the way we live our lives. It should never be misunderstood to think we can be influenced by self and Christ. To serve self is Anti-Christ. In the Christian faith, there is no such thing as "lookout for number one," or "take care of self first."
As Jesus said in Matthew 16:24, "If anyone desires to follow me, they must FIRST DENY THEMSELVES." Anything less than this is to follow self first and deny Christ.
