Keyword Study Colossians 3:1-4
In this post, I want to look at a group of verses that will hopefully give us insight into how we are to discipline our minds to remain focused.
"If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory."
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Col 3:1–4.
Breaking Down the Words:
1. Raised (G4891) - A new life solely devoted to God.
2. Seek (G2212) - Strive for
3. Above (G507) - Heavenly things
4. Right Hand of God (G1188) - The place of honor and authority overall things
5. Set your minds on (G5426) - Choose a side, to be single minded. (We may understand this as having tunnel vision.)
6. Above (G507) - Heavenly affairs
7. Earth (G1093) - Affairs of this world
8. Died (G599) - To have put off all loyalty to the affairs of this world
9. Life (G2222) - Active, vigorous and devoted to God
10. Hidden (G2928) - Concealed in Christ laid up in Heaven. (This is the stamp of Christ on your life as being the one you are now a slave to)
11. Life (G2222) - Hope of eternal life
12. Appears ( G5319) - Plainly Recognized, fully revealed
13. Glory (G1391) - The new glorious condition that has been promised
If the teaching you follow is not attempting to expose the original intended message of the Bible, I highly encourage you to find someone who does. Many of the misguided understandings of todays church, are caused by lazy teachings of the scriptures. Let's look at the intended message of these verses from God, through Paul in the original context.
"If then, you have been given a new life, devoted to God through Christ, then strive for the heavenly things where Christ was given the place of honor and authority over all things, by God. Be solely focused on heavenly affairs, do not get entangled in the affairs of this world. You must put off all loyalty to this world and place your loyalty in a life that is active, vigorous and devoted to God being a slave to Christ. When Christ, who is your hope of eternal life, has fully revealed himself and is plainly recognized by all, then you will also appear in the new glorious condition that was promised."
The Bible says what the Bible says. It's not a matter of opinion! You can choose to accept what it says or reject what it says. Remember this, to reject the truth of scripture is to remain loyal to this world. Loyalty toward this world and the ways of this world are infidelity towards Christ. We are called to a life that is loyal to Christ alone. It is to be an active and vigorous life lived for Kingdom purposes only.
Jesus said, "You have heard that it was said, "You should not commit adultery." But I tell you that if you look on a woman with lust, you have committed adultery in your heart."
What we do not realize is that we intently look on the things and affairs of this world with a lust in our heart for these things. When we do that, we have committed adultery on our Groom, the Lord Jesus Christ. Our place is not in this world, our attention is not to be on the affairs of this world. No, we have a higher purpose. We have been betrothed to One that is outside this world. Let us be faithful and true to the One who is coming for us. We are not called to establish his Kingdom here on earth, we are called to put our hope in the coming Kingdom that will destroy all other kingdoms.
